BIM for Structural Engineering

Overview
Structural engineers have been using computers long before Building Information Modeling software was available to design professionals and the building industry. However, there has long been a gap between the tools structural engineers use for analysis and design and the tools used to document their designs. Revit Structure bridges this gap and provides structural engineers with an opportunity to  streamline their analysis, design and design documentation processes.

One key to using Revit Structure successfully to bridge this gap is to recognize that the project file you create using Revit Structure is a centric database that can include a wealth of information that you can use for analysis and design purposes. Yes, your Revit Structure project files do contain a digital model from which you can derive your construction documents. However, it is much more than just a 3-dimensional modeling and document production tool. It is a tool that allows you to capture analysis and design information about your project so that you are in a better position to streamline your analysis and design process, minimize design errors, be more responsive to design changes, and be better prepared to evaluate design alternatives. With Revit Structure, you can completely define your analytical model so that you have all of the information necessary to perform the analysis and subsequent design.

There are many ways that you can use the information developed in your Revit Structure project files for analysis and design. At the very core of using Revit Structure is the ability to effectively create the data in such a way that you can share and coordinate the data with other design disciplines and use it for analysis and design purposes.

Autodesk Revit Structure 2012

Autodesk® Revit® Structure 2012 software is the purpose-built Building Information Modeling (BIM) solution for structural engineering firms, providing tools for structural design and analysis. Revit Structure integrates a multimaterial physical model and an independently editable analytical model for more efficient structural analysis while providing bidirectional links to popular structural analysis software. Make better decisions earlier in the design process by more accurately visualizing a structure before it is built. Revit Structure helps provide the advantage of BIM to improve multidiscipline coordination of structural design documentation, minimize errors, and enhance collaboration between engineering and architecture teams.

Project Storm for Revit Structure

Project Storm for Autodesk Revit Structure is a technology preview that provides cloud-based structural analysis to structural engineers as a part of the BIM process. Results can then be visualized and explored within Revit Structure, but disruptions to design workflows are minimized by performing analysis in the cloud. You can download the update from the Autodesk Labs site.

Project Storm for Revit Structure on Autodesk Labs

Below is a list of updates for this release of the technology preview:

1. Calculation Reports can now be generated as PDFs.

The PDF version of a calculation report can now be downloaded and saved locally. The content of the report is the same as on the website. It contains model views and tables with analysis results. The form of the report is ready to print and attach to a technical documentation.

2. Calculation Reports have been optimized with content refinement.

Several issues have been corrected in the content of a calculation report. Moreover a new presentation of linear supports is applied. They are presented as diagrams. Reports are more clear and compact.

3. Support for material defined as Type Parameter has been added.

There is no limitation for materials applied to members. Materials can be defined now both as instance or type parameters in models sent for analysis.

4. Improvements were made for results availability within Revit Structure.

In some cases it was possible that there were no results in Revit Structure although the analysis was completed.

Be sure to grab the new user manual from the Getting Started page.

Updating a technology preview with the speed of a lighting strike is alive in the lab.
